Dimitri Payet: My kids aren't allowed to say Cristiano Ronaldo's name

Published Dec. 16, 2016 1:45 p.m. ET

It appears that Dimitri Payet's relentlessness on the soccer pitch translates to his home life, as well. There's a new hard-and-fast rule around the Payet abode: No uttering Cristiano Ronaldo's name!

Like most kids interested in the sport, Payet's young ones are enamored with Lionel Messi and Ronaldo. The latter's name is verboten at Chateau Payet, however.

"I have kids, so I can understand the image that footballers have," Payet told Sport24, via Goal.com. "They are fans of some players, I see in their eyes. They admire and try to imitate their gestures, their words, their celebrations.

"They love Ronaldo and Messi. Since Euro 2016, though, they have no right to pronounce the name of Ronaldo!"

Payet is decidedly still salty from Euro 2016, where his French team fell to Ronaldo's Portugal in the final. Cruel summer, indeed. Ronaldo wasn't able to finish out the final due to injury, but that didn't mitigate the superstar's impact. And it didn't allow him to escape the wrath of Payet.

So, what's the punishment for saying the r-word? A thousand crunches? Getting sprayed with bronzer? We may never know.
