Earthquakes Move On From General Manager John Doyle

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

San Jose’s GM parts ways with the club after working together for 9 years.

The San Jose Earthquakes announced Monday that they and General Manager John Doyle would be parting ways after 9 years. Technical Director Chris Leitch was named interim General Manager after the decision was made.

During Doyle’s time with the team, the Earthquakes only made the playoffs twice and won the supporters shield after having the best record in 2012.

This move obviously shows the Earthquakes are ready to move in a different direction after a lack of results the past 9 years. The Earthquakes never made those transfers to put them over the top or even make them a respectable team in the west. Other than the year they had in 2012 the Earthquakes were never a team to take seriously in the MLS.

The Earthquakes have been a team stuck in the mud for years now. There hasn’t been a real sense of direction. They’ve been a mediocre team for too long.

Even with this season the Earthquakes are fighting for a playoff spot but it just doesn’t have the feel to it that it should. The Earthquakes have been underwhelming to watch and their play has been below average. They are not a playoff team and if they were too somehow make the playoffs they are not a team built to go far.

The Earthquakes have had problems up top and on the outside of the back line but there hasn’t been any progress made towards the problem. They did sign forward Henok Goitom but that signing is useless if the Earthquakes continue to only give him little amounts of playing time per match. Nothing has been done to fix the problems in the back and it showed in their match in Columbus as they struggled with the Columbus Crew’s wingers the entire match.

It’s always sad to see someone lose their job but this is a move that is best for the team and it’s a move that could point the Earthquakes in the right direction.
