England's Henderson a doubt for Euro 2016 after picking up knee injury
LIVERPOOL, England -- Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is set to miss the rest of the season and possibly the European Championship for England after hurting his knee in a Europa League match against Borussia Dortmund.
Henderson sustained ligament damage to his left knee, Liverpool said in a statement Friday, and is likely to be out for between six to eight weeks.
England coach Roy Hodgson selects his squad for Euro 2016 on May 12, which is in less than five weeks. The 25-year-old Henderson was expected to be one of the midfielders named in the 23-man group for the tournament, which starts June 10.
Liverpool said Henderson does not require surgery following the injury sustained in the first half of the 1-1 draw at Dortmund in the first leg of the quarterfinals.
Scans undertaken on Friday showed the midfielder has isolated damage to his lateral collateral ligament. Liverpool said such an injury typically means anything up to three months out, but that "Henderson's issue appears to be less serious."
