Eric Dier Signs New Tottenham Deal
Tottenham announced on Tuesday that they have secured England international Eric Dier to a new deal that will keep him at the club until 2021.
The news comes less than a week after the club wrapped up a long-simmering deal with Christian Eriksen. Since the Dane’s renewal, several other members of Tottenham’s first team have been linked with new deals, including Dier.
With Tottenham’s new stadium due to be ready by 2018, Dier’s new deal will keep him with the club as it heads into a new era defined in some part by their expanded 61,000 seat home.
Securing Dier’s signature is the latest coup that sustains and validates Mauricio Pochettino’s strategy with Tottenham. The Argentine’s emphasis on youth is seen as a long-term plan even if it’s already bearing meaningful fruit.
“There are many reasons I wanted to commit my future to Tottenham,” Dier was quoted as saying in the Guardian. “We have a fantastic squad full of young, exciting players. We’ve got the new stadium on its way, the fantastic facilities at the training ground, and a fantastic manager who’s great for all us young players. He really looks after us, and makes sure we keep improving.”

“Wembley being filled with 80,000 or more Tottenham fans is going to be an amazing experience. Playing in the Champions League there is very unique, so those two things are going to be fantastic.”
The announcements surrounding Eriksen and Dier’s futures with the club could yet spark more deals in the coming weeks. Harry Kane and Kyle Walker are two such players rumored to be in line for improved deals.
Presumably the club will also be looking to extend the contracts — and improve the terms — of several other valuable members of the starting XI. This summer’s transfer activity came at a substaintial cost, but the club’s primary concern then, now and in the future will be to secure its youthful starters for as long as possible.
Pochettino’s project at the club relies heavily on these reliable components of Tottenham’s machine. Securing Eriksen and Dier are just the first steps of a much more ambitious and, the club hopes, fruitful plan.
