Erwin Koeman has quit as coach of Dutch side FC Utrecht amid a dispute with the club's directors.

Utrecht says in a statement Tuesday that Koeman resigned because ''his working conditions do not match his demands or wishes.''

The club immediately replaced Koeman with former Netherlands midfielder Jan Wouters.

Koeman was in his first season at Utrecht. Relations with the club's leadership soured soon after his arrival when midfielder Rodney Sneijder - brother of Netherlands playmaker Wesley - was hired from Ajax without Koeman's approval.

The club also sold key players Dries Mertens, Kevin Strootman, Michel Vorm and Ricky van Wolfswinkel.
