Even Mauricio Pochettino thinks England were crazy to have Harry Kane take set pieces
There were a lot of bizarre things that England did at the Euros, but maybe nothing was stranger than Harry Kane taking corner kicks and free kicks. You'd be hard pressed to find a single person who understood that decision and that includes Kane's club manager Mauricio Pochettino.
"I don't want to criticize," said Pochettino. "But I think Harry is a top scorer, so why is he taking free-kicks or corners if his skill is to score?
"You need to stay in the box, not outside."
You may not have wanted to criticize, Mauricio, but that's exactly what you did. And that's OK! Because seriously, there is no defense for Kane taking England's set pieces.
It's not like Kane is some dead ball master. If he was then there could be an argument that he's more valuable on the ball than he is in front of goal, but that's not the case. He's, at best, average. So for average service, England decided to hurt themselves in front of goal. That's some pretty horrendous decision-making.
Roy Hodgson, the manager who thought this was a good idea, is no longer the England boss. He resigned and now Sam Allardyce is in charge of the Three Lions. What he thinks of Kane taking set pieces is still unknown, but considering he isn't Hodgson -- who we assume is the only person who thought it was a good idea because seriously, there can't be two of them -- odds are you won't see Kane standing over a corner kick or free kick again anytime soon.
