Everton primed to overpay for Watford striker

Everton want to sign Troy Deeney this January

Everton struck out on a number of their summer transfer targets, and will look to correct their mistake in January. That’s going to cause the Toffees to overpay Watford for attacker Troy Deeney.

The Watford striker isn’t every Premier League fan’s cup of tea, but I’m a fan of his game. He doesn’t always look pretty out on the pitch, but it’s hard to argue with his effectiveness. After all, he did notch 13 goals and seven assists for the Hornets last year.

I even think Deeney would fit well with Everton’s current roster. He currently thrives playing alongside big, powerful striker Odion Ighalo. It’s reasonable to think he could duplicate that kind of chemistry with Romelu Lukaku.

With all of that being said, it’s unlikely the transaction will be an efficient one from the Everton perspective. Watford turned down a 25 million pound bid from Leicester this summer for their 28-year-old attacker. In fact, Deeney signed a new contract as a result of the Foxes’ interest. That only means he’ll be more expensive when Everton come calling this January.

Everton are expected to chase Deeney this winter, in large part due to the arrival of Steve Walsh as their new director of football. He was reportedly the engine behind Leicester’s interest in Deeney this summer, so it’s logical to believe he’ll push the Toffees in the same direction.

It will be interesting to see just how much Everton will be willing to pay for Deeney’s services. I have a suspicion the asking price could easily exceed 30 million pounds. Don’t forget, the fact that Deeney is English will also drive his potential price higher.

At that fee, Everton would be wise to pass on Deeney. Even in today’s transfer market, that’s way above market value. The Toffees would be much smarter to spend that sort of cash on a younger attacker with significantly more upside.

Ultimately though, expect Everton to pay the premium this January to get the deal done. Their recent infusion of cash is going to put the club under immense pressure to spend serious cash in the winter window. Simply put, they can’t afford to express serious interest in Deeney and lose out due to the transfer fee required.

Everton fans who don’t like Troy Deeney should expect to be disappointed come January. Momentum is building towards the Toffees overpaying for the English attacker.
