Tottenham have been hard at work signing their most important players to new contracts over the past several weeks. Expect for Daniel Levy and company to make Erik Lamela the next Spurs star to commit his long-term future to the club in the coming days.
In the aftermath of today’s announcement of Eric Dier’s new contract, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino hinted at another similar announcement in the next couple of days. That little hint has lit Spurs social media ablaze with speculation.
Most fans believe that Jan Vertonghen is the most likely candidate. The Belgian has been a key defender for Pochettino and it’s likely the club would want to tie him down. I think, however, that the Argentine attacker is the better bet to lock up next.
My rationale for expecting a new Lamela deal is pretty straightforward. He’s the Tottenham star who could most improve his value if he put on a star performance during Champions League competition. It’s not impossible that he could play so well on Europe’s grandest stage, that his contract demands might price him out of Tottenham’s wage structure.

Levy and Pochettino are smart enough to see that as a realistic possibility. That’s why they’ll want to push Lamela’s deal to the forefront. There is significant potential value in locking him up for the long haul before he has the chance to blow up during Champions League play.
If Tottenham wait even a couple of weeks before getting to Lamela’s contract, it could be too late. He could play himself in a financial stratosphere that the club just can’t stomach. That would be a cruel twist for the passionate Spurs fan base. Just imagine watching Lamela light up the Champions League group stage only to hear that he’s destined for a move away from White Hart Lane.
That sort of thing could happen to Tottenham in the past, but things under Pochettino are different. He’s smart enough to tie up his best young talent before they get their head turned by another club. That’s why you’ll see Erik Lamela commit his long-term future to Tottenham very soon.
