Fans involved in brawl following Leeds-Eintracht Frankfurt friendly

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 3:37 p.m. ET

Fans of Leeds United and Eintracht Frankfurt have been involved in a mass brawl following a preseason friendly between the two teams in Austria.

Frankfurt came back from a goal down to triumph 2-1 but the evening was overshadowed by ugly scenes at the full-time whistle when a large group of supporters, some wearing balaclavas, clashed on the pitch.

German newspaper Bild claims 700 Leeds fans, who made up the majority of the crowd, fought with 200 of their opposite number. Both sets of players had left the field of play before the fighting broke out.

The Yorkshire Post has reported that a group of Frankfurt supporters were held outside the 2000-capacity Sportzentrum in Eugendorf before the match but was allowed to enter at kickoff.

The newspaper quoted Neil Slinn, a Leeds fan at the match, as saying: “A few of us went over to applaud the Frankfurt fans.

"I was going to shake their hands. Then their ultras jumped over the (advertising) boards and started attacking us. Some were wearing balaclavas and we were outnumbered.”
