FC Barcelona suffer shock defeat against minnows Alaves
Newly promoted side Alaves stunned reigning La Liga Champions Barcelona at Nou Camp, as they beat them 2-1.
Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Gerard Pique and Luis Suarez were rested by coach Luis Enrique, and Barcelona paid the price as Alaves, who were playing in Spain’s third division as recently as 2013, pulled off one of the biggest shocks in their history. The away side took the lead in the 39th minute when Deyverson converted from Kiko’s cross.
Barcelona had a shocking first half with misplaced passes, poor finishing and errors in communication. Barcelona came back stronger in the second half, and got their reward just a minute later when defender Jeremy Mathieu headed home from Neymar’s corner.
Lionel Messi was brought on by the hosts at the hour mark as they pressed for a winner.
But it was not to be, as within four minutes of Messi’s introduction, his Argentine compatriot Javier Mascherano mishit a pass in his own area. The ball was pounced on by Ibai Gomez, who showed great determination to score what turned out to be the winner for Alaves.
Barcelona brought on Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta but to no avail, as Barcelona crumbled to their first defeat of the season. Alaves held on comfortably and celebrated arguably the most famous win in their history of the club.
Goals galore for Madrid clubs
Cristiano Ronaldo opened his account for the season, as Real Madrid ran riot against Osasuna, winning the game 5-2. The Portugal captain was playing his first game of the season following his break after winning the Euros. And he got on to the score sheet just 6 minutes into the game to make it 1-0. Danilo, Sergio Ramos, Pepe and Luka Modric also scored for Real, before Osasuna pulled two back.
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid got their first victory of the season, thrashing Celta Vigo 4-0. Diego Simeone’s side had drawn their first two games against two newly promoted sides. And following the goalless first half, it looked like Atletico would be frustrated yet again.
However, Atletico turned on the style in the second half. Goals from Koke, Angel Correa, and a brace from Antoine Griezmann sealed the three points for Atletico.
