Former BVB Fan Favorite Lines Up as Opponent
Jakub Blaszczykowski left Borussia Dortmund in August for Wolfsburg. On Tuesday, the traveling Dortmund supporters showed that he hasn’t been forgotten.
Jakub Blaszczykowski, or Kuba as he is affectionately known to the Borussia Dortmund faithful, was a mainstay in the squad for the past eight seasons. The polish international had been an integral part of the first team during their back to back Bundesliga championship seasons of 2010-2011 and 2011-2012. He spent last season in the Serie A with Fiorentina on loan. Seeing him go, especially to another Bundesliga team, was one of the more sentimentally disappointing transfers of recent years.
The ageing Kuba’s reasons for leaving were without question a reflection of the addition of several talented young players. Yet, manager Thomas Tuchel has also hinted that there might have been more to it. According to the German magazine Kicker, Tuchel stated that there was an interest in moving Kuba to defense at right-back. This all seems fine and good considering the moves that were made to bring in more quality attackers than space for, but for the 30-year-old Polish international, this meant having to compete for pitch time with his fellow countryman and good friend Lukas Piszczek.
Instead of being presented with this situation, Kuba instead decided to pursue a move to another club. On August 1, 2016 the move to Wolfsburg became official and it only cost Wolfsburg 5 million Euro. Tuesday’s match in Wolfsburg was the first time that Kuba has lined up opposite his former teammates. Donning the captain’s band, Kuba started at right wing for his new club.

Despite a fairly even statistical line otherwise, Dortmund blew out Wolfsburg to the score of 5-1. Much of this was to the credit of goalkeeper Roman Burki who played a spectacular match, saving 8 shots on goal. However, after the match the visiting fans had just one thing on their mind, showing the former BVB legend the true meaning of Echte Liebe.
This author and Dortmund fan will still be wearing the number 16 kit of his favorite Dortmunder with pride, hoping if the reverse fixture is as comfortable as Tuesday’s was, that perhaps Kuba will see a goal or two come his way in front of the crowd that will always remember all he has done for Die Scharzwgelben.
