Former Ecuador goalkeeper Jose Francisco Cevallos has announced his retirement at the age of 40.

Cevallos, who made 89 appearances for Ecuador and kept goal in the country's first ever World Cup appearance in 2002, says he will hang up his gloves after his club Liga de Quito's match against Independiente del Valle on Sunday.

Cevallos is ''calm'' about his retirement because ''a new generation of players is ready to take over.''

The goalkeeper, known as the ''Hands of Ecuador'', won the Copa Libertadores with Liga in 2008, following that with the Copa Sudamericana in 2009 and the Recopa Sudamericana in 2009 and 2010 to complete the full set of continental club titles.
