Frank Lampard Leads NYCFC to Victory

A last minute goal from Frank Lampard was the difference as New York City FC defeated D.C. United in an entertaining match.

It was a perfect ending to a match that saw four goals come in the final 20 minutes. Lampard was the hero as the Englishman continues his incredible run of form. With the result NYCFC go back into first place in the Eastern Conference.

    How it Happened

    D.C. United had the better chances in the first half and Lloyd Sam found the breakthrough in the 36th minute to give the away side a 1-0 lead. Patrick Nyarko and Luciano Acosta provided the assists. Patrick Mullins had a golden opportunity to score in first half stoppage time, but Josh Saunders came up with a big save.

    After a rather uneventful start to the second half the match picked up in the 79th minute. A horrible back pass from Sean Franklin gifted wrapped the match tying goal for David Villa. The Spaniard has scored three goals in his last five appearances.

    Lampard would score the go ahead goal in the 85th minute as he tucked home a goal that was set up by Villa and Khiry Shelton. In the first minute of stoppage time Lamar Neagle erased the advantage with a headed goal off of a corner. Julian Buescher provided the pinpoint corner that tied up the match.

    The match winner came just two minutes later when Frank Lampard slotted home the brace. He received a pass from Shelton and showed good ball control before finishing from close range. His winner gives him 11 goals on the year thus far.

    NYCFC will enjoy the weekend off before heading to New England next Saturday to face the Revolution. D.C. United will go back to New York next Sunday to face the Red Bulls.
