Giovani dos Santos makes Mexico return as Juan Carlos Osorio names him to El Tri roster

Published Nov. 15, 2016 2:36 p.m. ET

Juan Carlos Osorio has named the Mexico roster for El Tri's October friendlies against New Zealand and Panama, and it is highlighted by the return of Giovani dos Santos. This marks the first time that dos Santos has been called up since last October and the first time Osorio has ever had him on the team.

Osorio didn't give dos Santos a look in his first eight months as manager. He said that he wanted to call dos Santos in for Copa America Centenario this summer, but that the player decided not to play and dos Santos was off the team for the September World Cup qualifiers as well.

Now, dos Santos is in terrific form for the LA Galaxy. He has 14 goals and 12 assists on the season, with seven goals and seven assists in his last 12 games alone.

Joining dos Santos in his return to the national team are his brother Jonathan dos Santos, Marco Fabian and Alan Pulido so three players will get chances to become El Tri regulars again. Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez is not on Mexico's roster for the friendlies as he tries to get settled at Bayer Leverkusen following an injury that sidelined him to start the season.
