Godin demands Jara receives Suarez-like ban for Copa incident
Diego Godin believes Gonzalo Jara deserves a ban akin to Luis Suarez's suspension for shoving his finger into Edinson Cavani's backside as Chile eliminated Uruguay from the Copa America on Wednesday.
Suarez was subject to a nine-game competitive international match ban following the striker biting Giorgio Chiellini in last summer's World Cup, which ruled the Barcelona forward out of this continental tournament.
The harsh sentence on Suarez was at the forefront of Uruguay defender Diego Godin's mind when he slammed Chile defender Jara for the way he wound up Cavani by pushing his finger into the Paris Saint-Germain striker's rear end.
Cavani was subsequently sent off for reacting by lashing out flippantly at Jara and host nation Chile pushed on to reach the semifinals with a 1-0 victory.
"More than the verbal provocation that was clearly there, the unfortunate thing is where he shoves his finger," Godin told reporters. "Everyone's seen what happened, there should be no need for me to spell out what he did. You know what happened. Edi doesn't hit him with his fist, it's just a push to his face with his hand.
"And the referee called him out on it. I hope CONMEBOL acts the way FIFA acted against Suarez last year. I do not know if there will be sanctions, I'm trying to bite my tongue, but hopefully there will be."
Barcelona star Suarez, meanwhile, praised his Celeste teammates and got a dig in at Chile for the failure to have ever won the Copa America while Uruguay has more victories than any other country.
"Big gratitude to all my colleagues who gave everything in the Copa did the beautiful shirt proud," he wrote on Twitter.
"Those who claim Uruguay played badly should remember we have won 15 Copa America titles. Some [Chile] should look at their own country who have no titles..."
Chile will face Peru or Bolivia in the last four, while Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Paraguay battle for a spot in the final on the other side of the draw.
