Guardado, Marquez included in Mexico roster for playoff vs. US
MEXICO CITY --
Mexico captain Andres Guardado and defender Rafael Marquez were included in El Tri's roster for Saturday's playoff against the United States for a berth in the 2017 Confederations Cup.
Guardado, who scored six goals to lead Mexico to victory in this year's CONCACAF Gold Cup, injured his left ankle in PSV Eindhoven's 2-1 Champions League win over Manchester United on Sept. 15. Marquez was substituted after straining a groin during Hellas Verona's 1-1 draw with Atalanta in Italy's Serie A on Sept. 20.
The roster was announced Monday.
Brothers Giovani and Jonathan dos Santos were selected by interim head coach Ricardo Ferretti after being left off for last month's exhibition draws against Trinidad and Tobago, and Argentina.
The playoff against the United States will be played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
