Hillsborough survivor launches appeal to find 'the man who saved my life'

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 1:34 p.m. ET

Twenty seven years on from the Hillsborough disaster, one fan's search for closure is just getting started.

Joe Smith, now 35, was eight years old when the deadly scenes unfolded during the April 1989 FA Cup semifinal between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. He revisited his harrowing memories while watching Daniel Gordon's powerful BBC documentary, which was just released across the pond.

Now, his search to find the man who saved his life on that fateful day is underway.

The emotional plea comes a little over two weeks after an inquest jury concluded that the 96 Liverpool fans who were crushed to death in overcrowded sections at Hillsborough Stadium were "unlawfully killed."

Since publishing the message to Facebook early Wednesday morning, Smith's post has garnered over 117,000 shares, and he's even offered to buy his rescuer a pint to show his appreciation.

Fingers crossed the powers of social media can help Smith track him down.
