Toronto reached the final after overcoming Montreal in a thrilling Eastern Conference Final. The second leg went to extra time, when Toronto pulled away to win 7–5 on aggregate.
Seattle will play in its first MLS Cup on Saturday. The Sounders were hardly favored to win MLS Cup when the playoffs began, but an upset of Supporters' Shield winners FC Dallas in the Western Conference Semifinals put Seattle into the conference finals, where the team beat Colorado Rapids.
In the sole match between Toronto and Seattle this season, the two teams played to a 1–1 draw.
