BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) -- Inter Milan defender Cristian Chivu has retired from football, terminating his contract with the Italian club and setting his sights on becoming an agent.

Inter says the club and the former Romania captain ''officially announce the mutual termination of the contract that has lasted seven years.''

The 33-year-old Chivu underwent four operations after breaking a toe on his right foot in August 2012 and has barely played for the past three seasons. His last match was in May.

Chivu signed for Inter in 2007 following stints at AS Roma and Ajax. He scored three goals for Inter, including the winning penalty in their Italian Cup victory over Napoli in January 2011.

Chivu played for Romania 75 times, retiring in 2011 citing injuries.
