John Stones broke a record for two clubs in one transfer

John Stones joined Manchester City for a fee of £47.5m, making him the second most expensive defender in history, just in behind Paris Saint-Germain’s David Luiz at £50m. Stones also broke two club more club records in the process. The Englishman is Everton’s most lucrative sale, but with his former club Barnsley’s sell-on percentage standing between 15-20 percent, he also breaks the record for the most they’ve ever received for a player.

Barnsley’s record has stood since 1998, when the Tykes sold Ashley Ward to Blackburn for a £4.5m fee. The exact cut they received from Stones’ transfer is unknown, but they’re guaranteed a hefty slice of the pie. £7m-plus will get you a lot of banana cream pastries.

It’s a great piece of business for Barnsley. They’ve received more from their cut of Stones than Liverpool paid for new center back Ragnar Klavan (£5m). Not bad at all for a guy who hasn't stepped foot on a Barnsley pitch since 2013.
