Jordan Lyden Pens New Aston Villa Contract

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Twenty year old Aussie Jordan Lyden signs a new contract with Aston Villa. The Villa Academy graduate extends his stay until the summer of 2019.

Versatile midfielder Jordan Lyden signed a new deal to stay at Villa Park for three more years. The Australian youth international made his Aston Villa debut last season under Rémi Garde, and immediately impressed with his relative calmness on the ball.

Under such excruciating circumstances last season,, Lyden stood out playing in a squad of such beleaguered players. At twenty years of age, he was tabbed to be a building block for the club moving forward.

Lyden has yet to make a senior team appearance this season. A bit curious, considering the likes of Gary Gardner and Ashley Westwood have struggled in the early part of the season. Compounded with injuries to Mile Jedinak and Aaron Tshibola, one would imagine a spot for Jordan Lyden would fill out.

It remains to be seen whether Roberto Di Matteo rates Lyden highly or not; or if even he sees Lyden in his first team plans this season. His positional flexibility–(he played right back in Premier League action last season)–should only aid in his quest for more match time.

Lyden spent much of his youth in Birmingham after moving from his home city of Perth, Australia. He once rejected a move to Chelsea’s Academy because Aston Villa did everything possible to convince him to stay. This loyalty was later rewarded with new terms.

Credit to Dr. Tony Xia in renewing a deal for a highly-rated youth player, whose contract was set to expire this summer.

With forty more league matches remaining + the FA Cup, Lyden should see ample opportunity to prove his ability on the pitch. If not, I imagine many clubs in the English pyramid would seek his services via a loan move.

In reserve team action, Lyden has gone the full ninety in both Premier League 2 matches, scoring a goal in the process. Transfermarkt.com estimates his market worth at just under £1 million pounds.
