Jose Mourinho hit with one-match ban and fine after accepting FA charges
Jose Mourinho is looking at spending some more time in the stands this weekend. The Football Association announced on Wednesday that the fiery Manchester United manager has been handed a one-match touchline ban and fined £50,000.
Mourinho accepted a pair of charges from the FA that resulted in the punishment. The touchline ban comes after Mourinho found himself sent to the stands by referee Mark Clattenburg during United's 0-0 draw with Burnley. Mourinho admitted to using abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official at half time in the tunnel and accepted the standard penalty, which is a match ban.
Though yet to be confirmed, it's expected that assistant manager Rui Faria will patrol the technical area for United's upcoming Premier League match against Swansea.
Separately, the fine stems from comments Mourinho made about referee Anthony Taylor prior to United's Oct. 17 clash against Liverpool. Mourinho said Taylor, who was born in the Greater Manchester area, might feel pressure in the match. Even though Mourinho followed up by saying he wouldn't say more because he had "... learned a lesson ... by being punished so many times for my words about referees."
It looks like that wasn't the case. The FA found those comments constituted improper conduct and brought the game into disrepute, and hit him with the fine.
This isn't the first time Mourinho has drawn the ire of the FA, and there's little reason to believe it will be the last.
