Jose Mourinho says 'we are in trouble' if Old Trafford doesn't get louder

Jose Mourinho hasn't managed Manchester United at Old Trafford yet, but he's already making a point of bringing back the atmosphere to the historic ground. He thinks the noise has disappeared in the three years since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure, owing largely to the diminishing "relationship between the team and the fans."

"If at Old Trafford, a couple of thousand away fans can be more noisy than 70,000, we are in trouble," said Mourinho.

"It means there is no connection."

Old Trafford does have a reputation for being quiet at times. Some have attributed it to Manchester United's gigantic fan base and even celebrity, making it so visitors want to go to a match just to see the place and not necessarily support the Red Devils. But even beyond that, there is no doubt that Old Trafford has been less boisterous over the last three years.

We'll see how Mourinho intends to rebuild that "relationship between the team and fans." The best way is simply to win, and maybe play soccer that is more watchable than it was under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal*. If he can do that, Manchester United will be playing big matches for big stakes and Old Trafford should be rocking once again.
