Klopp talks about Liverpool goalkeeping situation and who'll be first choice
Jurgen Klopp wasn’t shy about speaking on Liverpool’s goalkeeping situation with Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet both fit.
This summer, Liverpool addressed a long maligned issue: goalkeeper.
Fans were elated when the club announced the signing of Loris Karius from Mainz because he’d surely be an upgrade on the catastrophic Simon Mignolet.
Karius was set to be first choice, until he smashed his hand on Dejan Lovren’s face and broke a bone in the hand that required surgery to rectify.
But now Karius is back and Jurgen Klopp has a choice to make after Mignolet impressed agains Leicester: what does he do in goal?
“I knew when we signed Karius that we now have two really strong goalkeepers,” said Klopp, via Liverpool Echo. “That was the plan but unfortunately Lorius broke the bone in his hand which is not too cool for a goalkeeper. But he is now back. There is no pressure or something; that is the challenge and competition. In the end I want us all to be best friends, even when our best friends play in the same position.”
But pressure is good according to the boss, something that’ll push both keepers to be better.
“That’s how it is, that’s football, it’s about performing,” said Klopp. “And we all have this pressure. I’m happy that Lorius is back. He is a great, great character – a really good guy – and a real goalkeeper so that’s good. I’m fine and if they all stay fit in this position, that’s all I need.”
Klopp has been a staunch defender of Mignolet since he took the job in October, even rewarding the Belgian with a new contract.
Naturally, we all know what this means: we’re at the dawn of the Alex Manninger era at Anfield.
