Landon Donovan reportedly set to end retirement, re-join LA Galaxy
Landon Donovan is reportedly going to come out of retirement and play for the LA Galaxy again. The MLS and United States legend retired from the sport after the 2014 season, but Blake Thomsen reported that he is ready to return. Multiple outlets have since confirmed the report and according to Kevin Baxter, the signing could be made official as early as today.
The Galaxy will have salary cap room to sign Donovan because they let Nigel de Jong go two weeks ago. Whether LA could have kept de Jong and still added Donovan is unclear, because teams do not release salary or cap information, but with de Jong out there is no doubt the cap space is available. The transfer deadline has closed since de Jong left, but that only applies to players registered to a club. Because Donovan does not have a contract with anyone, he is free to sign with anyone outside the window.
Donovan is now 34 years old and there is no way of telling what kind of shape he is in after nearly two years away from the sport. However, he did have one of his best seasons ever in 2014, scoring 10 goals and adding 19 assists as the Galaxy captured MLS Cup. Many people were surprised when he announced his retirement because he was playing so well and it was clear that he could still be a great player in MLS.
The Galaxy have struggled of late and will be hoping to get back among the best teams in the league. Adding the man who leads the league in MLS Cups, all-time goals and all-time assists isn't a bad way to do it, if he still has any gas left in the tank.
