Lazio forward Immobile handed 1-match ban and fine

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 8:19 p.m. ET

ROME (AP) Lazio forward Ciro Immobile has been banned for one-match after being sent off in Monday's defeat to Torino.

Immobile, who has scored 15 goals this season, was shown a straight red card before the break for jerking his head at Nicolas Burdisso, landing his shoulder in the defender's face.

Lazio had asked the league's disciplinary body to review footage of the incident but in Wednesday's sentence, the league says it can only use video evidence "in cases of violent conduct or serious anti-sporting behavior not seen by the referee."

It does recognize that while Immobile's behavior was "certainly anti-sporting, it does not have particularly serious connotations."

Immobile, who previously played for Torino, had been protesting for an apparent handball by Iago Falque on a cross of his inside the area.

The match was goalless when Immobile was sent off. Torino went on to win 3-1.

Immobile will miss Sunday's Serie A match at Atalanta, and was fined 10,000 euros ($12,000).
