Lionel Richie to Messi: Just take it 'easy like Sunday morning'

Updated Mar. 5, 2020 1:32 a.m. ET

By now, just about anybody that should or could weigh in on Lionel Messi's announcement he's retiring from international duty has done so. The country's president has said his piece and so, too, has Diego Maradona. The mayor of Buenos Aires even unveiled a statue of Messi.

Meanwhile, the Barcelona star himself has yet to address whether or not he'll call of his retirement, but R&B singer Lionel Richie has offered up his two cents on the matter — because sharing the same first name makes you qualified.

"Make it easy like Sunday morning," Richie said, referencing the lyrics of his "Easy" song. "Don't get all [bent] out of shape."

Musical jokes aside, the four-time Grammy winner did have some sound advice for Messi, however.

"If I told you how many times I lost at the Grammys, and it only made me do one thing: Get better," Richie said. Whether Messi decides to heed that advice or rejoin the Argentina team remains to be seen, but Richie is sure his brother-in-name will be just fine.

"I'm sure he's down right now, but he's a Lionel — he can't go wrong!" Richie joked.
