Liverpool: News on Roberto Firmino's injury (And Sakho)

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Jurgen Klopp updates the availability of Roberto Firmino (and Liverpool’s forgotten man Mamadou Sakho.)

Roberto Firmino was a late drop for Liverpool against Chelsea (due to a muscle in the groin area ‘you don’t normally use’ according to Jurgen Klopp???) but the manager says he’s fit to face Derby County on Tuesday if Klopp so desires.

When Klopp told the media that Firmino was unavailable, he was sure to continually assert that it was a very small issue and the only thing holding the Brazilian back from playing was that the medical staff couldn’t give Klopp a guarantee that the injury wouldn’t get worse, so it makes no surprise that he’s back just four days later.

“We gave him yesterday and today again because the medical department told me that he could have played [on Friday],” Klopp said, via Liverpoolfc.com. “But I heard the word risk too often so I decided no. I’m very happy that it worked out. They told me if we give him three days then everything will be perfect. Today is the fourth day. He has already had three, so he is in.”

Oh yeah, there’s another injured player making his way back to the team: Mamadou Sakho.

The defender rejected loan moves on deadline day despite Klopp telling him to leave and he’s nearly back from injury.

“[He is] still working on [his fitness],” said Klopp. “Of course he is closer, he is still working. But [being] match fit is a big difference. That’s all. It’s not about only making a few sessions.”

Klopp doesn’t exactly do much to dispel rumors that Sakho is so far in the doghouse that he can’t see the light.

“It’s not about how the player feels. It’s about how I feel and how close the player is. That needs time. It’s a long, long time that he didn’t play, for sure,” said Klopp. “All the other players had not that long a break. Then it makes more sense that you really use the time and that’s what we are working on.”
