Mario Gomez leaving Besiktas because of Turkey attempted coup
Mario Gomez will not return to Besiktas next season because of the attempted coup in Turkey. The striker wrote a Facebook post explaining his decision.
"The reason for this is completely down to the political situation! There are no sporting or any other reasons that have made me make this decision," said Gomez. "It is purely down to the terrible events that happened in the last few days. I hope you can understand that!"
There was an attempted coup in Turkey last week that resulted in the deaths of more than 100 people. In the days since, thousands of member of the Turkey army have been arrested.
Gomez joined Besiktas on a season-long loan last season and scored 28 goals as the Turkish club captured the league title. Besiktas had the option to buy him outright this summer, but that won't be happening now. He will now go back to Fiorentina, where the Viola will decide whether to work him into their team or maybe sell him elsewhere.
"I have to tell you Besiktas fans personally that it is very heavy for me that I will not be playing for this great club in front of you wonderful fans in this unique stadium anymore," Gomez said.
"I hope that these political problems can be solved in a peaceful manner soon. Then it would be my great wish to play for Besiktas again."
