Olympique Marseille have appointed former Real Madrid captain Michel as their new coach, the French club announced on Wednesday. The 52-year-old takes over from Marcelo Bielsa, who resigned after the 1-0 home defeat to Caen in their first Ligue 1 game of the season on August 8.

Michel has signed a two-year contract with the French club, and a statement released on Wednesday read: "Jose Miguel Gonzalez del Campo, known as Michel, is the new Olympique Marseille coach. A new page in our club history has been opened."

Michel had been without a club since January after winning a domestic Cup and two Superleagues in Greece with Olympiakos. The former Spain international has also managed Rayo Vallecano, Getafe and Sevilla in La Liga in his coaching career.

Michel's first game will be against Troyes on Sunday in a Ligue 1 match at the Velodrome stadium. Marseille have lost their opening two league games, 1-0 defeats against Caen and Reims.
