Marseille continue hot streak, edge past resilient Rennes
PARIS - Winger Remy Cabella scored the winner as an improving side Marseille won 1-0 at Rennes on Thursday to climb to eighth place in the French league.
Cabella, who joined in the offseason following an unhappy spell at Newcastle in the English Premier League, profited from a poor clearance to drill a shot past goalkeeper Benoit Costil in the 21st minute.
Marseille moved above 10th-place Rennes and Lorient on goal difference, three points behind Saint-Etienne. Cabella was involved in most of Marseille's best moves. Early in the second half, his curling free-kick was headed just over by club top scorer Michy Batshuayi in the 52nd.
Shortly after, Cabella surged down the right and set up Argentine winger Lucas Ocampos, who just missed the target with an overhead kick.
