Mateo Kovacic Will Stay with Real Madrid

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Despite his lack of consistent playing time with Real Madrid since joining the club in August of 2015 because of a FIFA Financial Fair Play regulation from Inter Milan, manager Zinedine Zidane has shown his upmost confidence in the Croatian midfielder and has quickly shot down any rumor of the 22 year-old leaving the La Liga squad.

Reports from Italian sports outlets said that Serie A club AC Milan were set to offer an interesting proposal for Kovacic that would have sent him out on loan for this season with a buyback clause in the deal giving Milan the opportunity to buy the player at the end of the loan deal.

As has been the case several times already during the summer transfer window, Zinedine Zidane was quick to squash the idea of Kovacic possibly leaving the club having only been around for a year.

More from The Real Champs

Kovacic has proven in his sparing playing time that he can be a good squad rotational player that Zidane uses if Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, or any other holding midfielder needs a game off or if injuries arise throughout the year. Kovacic with his ability to not only play well defensively, but also offensively is something that has been underestimated since arriving in the Spanish capital.

Much like Kroos, Kovacic likes to make passes to open up the field for his teammates, however, he is also known for his ability for long distance shots from the edge of or outside the box. Despite making 25 appearances with Real over the last year, he is yet to score but don’t be surprised if he nets one in the near future.

Kovacic played the full 90 minutes against Real Sociedad in the opening game of the La Liga season and sure to be featured much for frequently this season as well.
