Matz Sels Should Remain Number One for Newcastle United
Matz Sels has proven himself worthy of remaining Newcastle United’s top goalkeeper after his performance against Derby.
There is a battle for the number one keeper at Newcastle United. Remember how we all thought Karl Darlow would be a shoo-in for the top spot? Then Matz Sels came along and has dazzled us every since the third match of the season.
Consider me a Sels fan right now. I think he’s done everything right, in keeping an organized defense and getting himself a couple of clean sheets. But it also comes down to the club’s defense which has a done a fantastic job of protecting Sels.

Of course, no keeper can win a game on his own. If he is bombarded with shots, and the defense keeps leaving open gaps, then the keeper is bound to let one in. Matz Sels has been blessed this season with something that other Newcastle keepers have lacked in the past.
Great defense.
I’ve not seen a better defense in all my years of watching Newcastle United. Of course, I had the benefit of growing up in the downward spiral of the 2000s. I never had a chance to watch and enjoy the club at its best. Only sticking with the club at their worst.
Matz Sels is bringing a new sense of optimism to a club that has had a deplorable defense in recent years. His attitude is positive, his keeping is superb, and his name just flows.

We’re lucky to be witnessing a strong battle for the number one spot, because it was always Tim Krul. Not that Krul is a bad keeper, I often tell people he was one of the best in the Premier League bogged down by terrible defense. But there has never been real competition for the position, and now that there is, the keeping I think will only get better over time.
