Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is flexing his power muscles around White Hart Lane

Tottenham fans have been able to complain about the club not backing their manager for years. Current Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has changed all that. Instead, he’s wielding power at the North London Club like no manager has been able to in years.

In just the last two days, we’ve had two brilliant examples of Pochettino wielding a great deal of backroom power at the club. The first example, was pushing Daniel Levy to meet Newcastle’s asking price for midfielder Moussa Sissoko.

Previous Tottenham managers wouldn’t have been able to convince Levy to stump the proper fee. In sharp contrast, Pochettino managed to convince Levy to up his offer from his Spanish vacation. He didn’t even need to be in the same country as Levy to wield his influence.

If that wasn’t impressive enough, Pochettino showed off even more influence today. Reports from England have now broken that the Spurs manager has inserted himself into Christian Eriksen’s contract talks with the club. The club and player had been at a standstill for weeks, but now it seems negotiations are on the move again.

You have to imagine that Pochettino put some pressure on both sides. He certainly advised Levy to offer a bit more money, but probably also had a word with Eriksen’s camp to lower their wage demands as well. There’s now significant optimism that a new deal can be struck soon after the Dane returns from international duty.

Fans really shouldn’t be surprised that Pochettino has such influence. He’s turned the club around drastically since his arrival. He’s earned the trust of both Spurs fans and management.

The real question becomes whether or not the trend can continue. Pochettino has been given a great deal of rope to make his own choices, but Levy and company will be watching how his decisions work out very closely. If players like Eriksen and Sissoko fail to live up to their price tags, Pochettino’s power erode even faster than it arrived.

Most Spurs fans will take great comfort in the fact that their beloved club is finally backing the manager. Mauricio Pochettino is certainly the most powerful man at White Hart Lane today.
