Mesut Ozil remains lukewarm about Arsenal future
Mesut Ozil will restart contract talks with Arsenal
Arsenal fans who desperately want Mesut Ozil to commit his long-term future to the Gunners could be in for a long wait. The German star is ready to restart contract negotiations with the club, but once again failed to enthusiastically commit his future to the Premier League club.
Strangely, Ozil seemed more excited about a possible return to Germany or late-career move to MLS than signing a new deal at Arsenal. His latest comments give the Gunner faithful even more concern about the midfielder’s commitment to the club.
Some Arsenal fans will be encouraged by the fact that contract talks are going to resume. Ozil had cut off talks to focus all of his attention on Euro 2016. Now, at least the two sides can begin to exchange figures once more.
Most Gunners fans will view the resumption with a healthy amount of skepticism. The club have never seemed to make any real progress with the player’s representatives. Surely the two sides can’t be that far apart on wages for the midfield star.
It stands to reason that something else is at play. Ozil has consistently questioned the club’s commitment to spend big in the transfer window, and it’s unlikely this summer changed his perception. Both Ozil and fellow midfielder Alexis Sanchez seem unimpressed by Arsene Wenger’s frugality in the transfer market.
WIth just two years left on his current contract, things should start to get serious between Ozil and the club in the coming weeks. Arsenal will do everything possible to lock him up long-term, but they can’t afford to let his contract run down further. Doing so, would open them up to the possibility of losing their midfield talisman for nothing. Even a team of their resources can’t afford that sort of financial malpractice.
Arsenal fans should hope that Ozil’s just playing coy. After all, confessing his undying love for the club wouldn’t be a terrific negotiating tactic for a player pushing for a new deal. If it isn’t just a negotiating ploy, Arsenal may have to part ways with Mesut Ozil sooner than many fans would have ever expected.
