Mexican league matches canceled as refs go on strike to protest players' threats
There will be no Liga MX matches this weekend because the Mexican league's referees have gone on strike. The referees union said they would not provide officials for this weekend's matches and the league had no choice but to put off all 10 matches.
The strike was announced just before the first game of the weekend, a Friday night contest between Veracruz and Puebla. The referees showed up for the match, but when the union announced their strike, the referees opted not to officiate.
The decision from the referees union comes after a pair of incidents in Copa MX during the week. Club America's Pablo Aguilar and Toluca's Enrique Trivero were shown red cards in separate matches for threatening the referees, which the union obviously took issue with.
Aguilar was suspended for 10 matches and Trivero for eight, but even after the bans were issued, the union decided to go ahead with the strike.
"The Mexican Referee's Association is united for an exemplary sanction. We ask for respect and no more violence," the union tweeted.
The expectation is that the referees will return to action next week, and so will the league. The matches will be made up as well, although the league has yet to announce when that will happen.
