MLS Rumors: Chicago Fire and New York Red Bulls Interested in Nicklas Bendtner

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

MLS Rumors are beginning to stir as the Chicago Fire and the New York Red Bulls are reportedly interested in free agent forward Nicklas Bendtner.

According to MLS Transfers via Twitter, “Source: Nicklas Bendtner has fielded interest from Chicago Fire and New York Red Bulls.” The Danish forward is currently a free agent after his contract with Vfl Wolfsburg was terminated after last season. He has played for some of the best teams in Europe and is still only 28-years old.

After scoring only three goals in 31 appearances since 2014, Wolfsburg decided to cut ties with the Danish international. Bendtner has previously played for Arsenal, Birmingham City, Sunderland, and Juventus throughout his professional career. He could be an interesting designated player target for MLS teams.

The Chicago Fire could desperately use Nicklas’ scoring ability as they are one of the lowest scoring teams in the league. They are also the worst team so far in 2016. The New York Red Bulls on the other hand are the third highest scoring team in MLS. Both teams are intriguing destinations for the 28-year old.

The Chicago Fire only have one designated player on their roster and could use another goalscorer to play alongside David Accam. Although, Kennedy Igboananike is still on Chicago’s roster as a DP this season, he was traded to D.C. United earlier in the year.

The New York Red Bulls have the maximum amount of designated players on their roster but they may be able to add Bendter without using a DP spot. Also, one of their designated players is a loanee, so they could cancel his deal to sign Nicklas.

The Danish forward has scored 46 club goals throughout his career in over 200 appearances. He also has over 70 caps for Denmark and has recorded 29 career international goals. After having a great start to his career at Arsenal, Bendter has fallen on tough times and is searching for a new club. The Chicago Fire and the New York Red Bulls may be the perfect destination if the 28-year old decides to move to MLS.

It will be interesting to see if Nicklas Bendter does in fact make the move to MLS. He hasn’t had much success in Europe lately and a move stateside could be good for him. The Chicago Fire could definitely use a big name singing while the New York Red Bulls would love to strength their attack.
