Newcastle United have continued to show a human touch with a wonderful gesture to a lifelong fan of the club.

The club posted a letter to the family of the late Ernest Wears, in which they expressed their condolences at his passing.

A picture of the letter, which is signed by Sue Barker – P.A to Rafa Benitez, was posted on the social media website Twitter.

The caption along with the tweet read: “Incredibly nice, uneeded, unselfish touch. Absolutely love this club, my grandad would’ve loved this.”

Dated the 15th of September 2016, the letter read as follows: “Dear All, On behalf of Rafa Benitez and the team, I send my condolence following the loss of one of our greatest fans.

“I know Ernest was a loyal supporter of the Clyb and continued to shout for “the Toon” even when moving out of the area. I am sure you have all heard many a story of the ups and down of the team over the years and listened to the frustrations Ernest may have had too!

“For this, and his support, may we thank you all so much. Are thoughts are with you all at this sad time, in particular his wife Ellen and children Sean and Beverly.

“I hope you all carry on supporting Newcastle United, just like your husband/father. Thinking of you all today.”

The reception of the letter among fans has been excellent, and the editor of influential fanzine Tru Faith, Michael Martin, called it a ‘brilliant touch’.

Other supporters went on to praise how the club seem to have got their heart back after a couple of years in the darkness.

United take on Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday and will hope to continue with their excellent form.
