Newcastle defender Daryl Janmaat breaks two fingers punching a wall
The last thing Newcastle United need in the midst of the Premier League relegation battle is players injuring themselves off the pitch in completely avoidable ways, but that's what happened this weekend.
Dutch defender Daryl Janmaat, who had to come off in the first half of the Magpies' 3-1 loss to Southampton after tweaking his hamstring, reportedly was so frustrated he broke two fingers in the locker room after punching a wall.
Janmaat was seen leaving the stadium with his arm in a sling, and the Chronicle reports that the Dutch international's self-inflicted injury occured during a tense halftime talk in the Newcastle dressing room.
But there is some good news, since most soccer players don't require functioning hands, Janmaat won't be kept of the pitch by that punch. His hamstring, however, may beg to differ.
We'd love to tell you that this story is totally crazy and shocking and how could a professional athlete ever risk his or her own health by doing something as stupid as punching a wall? Alas, this happens so regularly in sports nowadays that we barely bat an eyelash.

The Los Angeles Clippers star was just about to return from a leg injury suffered earlier in the season when he fractured his hand on the face of a team staffer (and close friend!) in late January. Griffin missed the next two months.

What's a worse idea than punching a wall? That's right, kids. Punching glass! So, of course, the NBA center took out his anger after a playoff loss on a glass-cased fire extinguisher. The wound required stitches. Again, this was IN THE PLAYOFFS.
NY Yankees' Kevin Brown breaks hand by punching a wall
Already frustrated by an injury-plagued season in 2004, Brown made it worse with this not so bright decision. After missing the rest of the regular season, the Yankee returned just in time to get torched by the Red Sox in the decisive Game 7 of the ALCS that year and retired the next season.
Then-NY Mets pitcher Jason Isringhausen breaks his throwing hand punching a trash can
This is just a sad tale of a baseball pitcher willingly decommissioning his money-maker. Isringhausen did become a future All-Star, but he missed most of the 1997 season and all of '98 thanks to his outburst, before getting traded in 1999. To be fair, who knew trash cans were so robust?
