Newcastle United Continue to win and Shelvey to Score

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

A 6-0 win over QPR gave Newcastle United their sixth straight victory and their fifth straight league win, keeping Newcastle United just a point behind leaders, Huddersfield.

Newcastle United is by far the best scoring team in the Championship right now. Their goal differential is the highest in the Championship with 12. The closest to that total is third placed Barnsley.

This offense is the reason why Newcastle United continues to dominate their matches. And they’re being helped by a defense and a goalkeeper that is keeping the ball away from their side of the pitch.

Possession was equal throughout the match but get this. To QPR’s 7 shots, Newcastle United took 29. That’s more than four Newcastle shots per QPR shot. No wonder we netted six goals.

Jonjo Shelvey has been providing much-needed offense and playmaking throughout. His two goals against QPR are just another addition to what is shaping up to be his breakout moment as a Newcastle United player. I’m a Shelvey fan, and I hope he continues to do well moving forward, his offense is what is helping Newcastle United win these games.

What’s very exciting to see is that the defense isn’t letting anything through. The defense against QPR was stellar in allowing minimal shots, and when shots were taken, they were forced to be taken where the defense was confident Matz Sels could stop them.

This is a team that is in sync with one another, prepared to work with one another. Rafa Benitez’s Rafalution is more than just a chant in the streets or on Twitter. It’s more than just the hopes and dreams of every Newcastle United fan.
