Newcastle United is Bound to Make Some Changes Now

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Now that the Summer transfer window is over, Newcastle United looks set to make some changes to their overall squad lineup.

On September 10, Newcastle United face off against Derby County. Derby County is currently struggling, and Newcastle will want to take advantage of the disarray to get another win to make it five in a row.

But with the transfer window closed, Newcastle United has some new options to use in their match against Derby. Yoan Gouffran has been a top choice on the wing, but with Christian Atsu now in the mix, I expect Gouffran to be benched to give Atsu a chance at the first team.

Another option on the wing would be to put Daryl Murphy up front. It would be a waste to keep Gouffran on the wing and not utilize either Atsu or Murphy.

On defense, DeAndre Yedlin could be set to take over for Daryl Janmaat, who has been sold. Yedlin has been praised by managers and critics and Rafa Benitez is going to want to give Yedlin as much playing time as possible to help build up the American’s confidence and skills.

Achraf Lazaar could be set to replace Paul Dummett at left-back. Lazaar has an attacking ability but a strong defensive mind to get back into position when the ball is coming the opposite way. It’s what the club needs and both Ciaran Clark and Paul Dummett have not done well in that regard.

Goalkeeping wise, I have no problem with Matz Sels continuing his run in between the posts. But I think that Karl Darlow is looking at some potential playing time in the coming weeks. Matz Sels has proven himself as an adept keeper, and Benitez is going to want to test the waters with Karl Darlow now.

A lot of changes could be coming to Newcastle United’s starting lineup, so don’t be shocked if things are moved around come Saturday.
