#OTD in 1996, Eric Wynalda scores first goal in MLS history
Happy birthday, Major League Soccer!
Twenty years ago today, a league was born. On April 6, 1996, the San Jose Clash and D.C. United converged at Spartan Stadium in San Jose, Calif. for the inaugural fixture of an embryonic league. Little did we know that two decades later, it would grow and persist as the United States' top tier of professional soccer.
At the heart of it all was Eric Wynalda, a San Diego State graduate who began his career in Germany with FC Saarbrucken and VfL Bochum before going on to star with the U.S. national team. Arguably one of his most cherished moments, though? It has to be this.
Yes, that's a young Wynalda, nutmegging Jeff Agoos and dispatching a curling finish for the league's first goal in the 87th minute in a 1-0 victory over D.C. It sent a sell-out crowd of 31,683 into delirium and created many, many fans since.
In addition, MLS will honor the historic day with a live stream of the match at 8 p.m. ET. Be sure to tune in!
