Panathinaikos docked 3 points as cash woes pile up

ATHENS, Greece (AP) Greek soccer league organizers have deducted three points from Panathinaikos after the Athens club failed to settle unpaid wages to German defender Jens Wemmer.

Organizers say the points will be returned if the debt is settled. The decision dropped Panathinaikos two places to 11th in the 16-club league with 29 points from 26 matches.

Panathinaikos is facing the threat of relegation over mounting financial troubles amid reports that players have been skipping practice in protest at payment delays. Club officials have refused to comment on the reports.

AEK Athens currently leads the standings with 57 points and is vying for its first Greek league title in 24 years.
