Pjanic, Dzeko score; Rubinho, Evra see red as Juventus fall to Roma
Roma picked up their first win of the new season on Sunday at the Stadio Olimpico with a 2-1 victory over 10-man Juventus to send the defending champions crashing to a second straight defeat.
Miralem Pjanic, denied by the post in the opening half, gave the hosts a deserved lead with a powerful free-kick in the 61st minute.
After Juve had Patrice Evra sent off for a second yellow card with 12 minutes remaining, Roma made them pay seconds later when Manchester City's on-loan striker Edin Dzeko headed in Iago Falque's cross for his first Serie A goal.
Paulo Dybala reduced the arrears with three minutes remaining but Juve did not find the equaliser despite having chances to do so.
Juve had suffered a surprise 1-0 setback at home to Udinese in their Serie A opener last week while Roma, who finished a distant second to the Turin giants last season, were held to a 1-1 draw at Hellas Verona.
The Romans dominated Sunday's game from start to finish with Juve failing to test Roma keeper Wojciech Szczesny until late in the match.
Roma started well. In the opening minute, the Giallorossi appealed for a penalty after Alessandro Florenzi fell in the box following contact from Mandzukic but the referee waved play on.
Keita and Lago Falque then saw their attempts go wide.
Pjanic wasted a good chance for the hosts in the 17th minute when he got behind Giorgio Chiellini's clearance but his right-footed volley from the edge of the area was off target.
Roma kept up the pressure and were unlucky not to break the deadlock in the 24th minute.
Chelsea's on-loan winger Mohamed Salah set up Pjanic just outside the area but his right-footed shot, though it beat Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, struck the left post.
Juve struggled to put a good move together and in the 39th minute, Pjanic's central free-kick was saved by Buffon in the last chance of the opening half.
Early in the second half, Martin Caceres tried his luck from outside the area but his effort flew high and wide.
In the 57th minute, Pjanic could have made it 1-0 for Roma when he got behind Edin Dzeko's pass but his left-footed shot from the heart of the area lacked pace and was saved by Buffon.
Buffon was called again three minutes later to clear Dzeko's shot towards the near post.
Roma's efforts were then rewarded.
Buffon could do nothing to stop Pjanic's right-footed free-kick from sailing into the top left corner of goal.
In the 66th minute, Juve had their third-choice goalkeeper Rubinho sent off from the bench for dissent.
Roma kept up the pressure and in the 71st minute, Radja Nainggolan warmed the hands of Buffon with a stinging drive from 30 yards.
Three minutes later and Dzeko's close-range attempt was blocked by Chiellini.
Juve suffered a huge setback when Evra was handed his marching orders after a late challenge on Juan Manuel Iturbe.
Roma doubled their lead seconds later when Dzeko got past his Chiellini to nod the ball past a helpless Buffon.
Juve pulled one back when substitute Roberto Pereyra set up Dybala in the box and his diagonal shot beat Szczesny.
Seconds from time Leonardo Bonucci's header from Dybala's cross forced Szczesny into a full-stretch save as the hosts held on for a deserved three points.
Carpi 1-2 Inter Milan
Stevan Jovetic's late penalty handed Inter Milan a 2-1 win at newly-promoted Carpi on Sunday evening.
Carpi looked to be heading for a 1-1 draw in their first ever Serie A game at home after substitute Antonio Di Gaudio cancelled out Jovetic's opener with nine minutes remaining.
However, after Carpi's Gabriel Silva brought down Fredy Guarin inside the area, Jovetic, an on-loan striker from Manchester City, came to the rescue for a second successive game by converting from the penalty spot one minute from time.
The win allowed Inter to maintain a 100 per cent record after their 1-0 triumph over Atalanta in their opener, which was also courtesy of Jovetic's winner.
Carpi, meanwhile, are still searching for their first point after their 5-2 defeat at Sampdoria on their debut.
Chievo 4-0 Lazio
Chievo produced a convincing performance at home and beat Lazio to pick up their second win of the season.
Riccardo Meggiorini put the hosts on their way in the 12th minute before Alberto Paloschi doubled the advantage on the half-hour mark.
Valter Birsa made it 3-0 on the stroke of half-time and Paloschi added his second of the evening in the 68th minute to cap off a wonderful evening for the Verona outfit.
The victory has lifted Chievo to the top of the standings, level on six points with Torino, Inter, Sassuolo and Palermo two games into the season.
Lazio went into the contest looking to make amends for their failure to reach the Champions League group stages.
The Romans lost 3-0 at Bayer Leverkusen in midweek for a 3-1 aggregate defeat and will play in the Europa League this season.
The visitors, 2-1 winners over Bologna in their Serie A opener, were denied an early lead when Chievo goalkeeper Albano Bizzarri made two great saves from Antonio Candreva and Keita's close-range attempts.
Genoa 2-0 Hellas Verona
Genoa produced a convincing performance at home to Hellas Verona on Sunday to pick up their first win of the season.
Second-half goals from substitute Leonardo Pavoletti and summer signing Serge Gakpe ensured a 2-0 success and the first points of the season for hosts.
The Grifoni took a deserved lead in the 57th minute. Hellas failed to clear a dangerous ball in the area and an unmarked Pavoletti struck a right-foot shot from 12 yards past goalkeeper Rafael.
Genoa doubled their lead in the 76th minute, Gapke's close-range header from Tomas Rincon's cross beating Rafael.
Substitute Giampaolo Pazzini rattled the crossbar with a powerful header two minutes from time for the visitors, who lost midfielder Emil Hallfredsson to an injury in the first half.
Udinese 0-1 Palermo
Luca Rigoni scored the only goal of the game as 10-man Palermo upset Udinese 1-0 at the Friuli stadium to pick up their second straight win in Serie A.
The Italian midfielder put the visitors ahead in the eighth minute and despite being reduced to 10 men from the 70th minute after defender Aljaz Struna was shown his second yellow card, the Sicilians held on for victory.
Udinese, inspired by last week's 1-0 triumph at Juventus, dominated possession but fell behind after a great move from Franco Vazquez allowed Palermo to go in front.
Vazquez got past his marker and surged inside the Udinese area before crossing the ball towards Rigoni, who headed in from close range to beat Udinese goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis.
Cyril Thereau twice had the opportunity to equalise.
In the 17th minute, Stefano Sorrentino palmed Thereau's close-range shot over the crossbar while one minute later, Giancarlo Gonzalez made a goal-line clearance from the Frenchman's goal-bound attempt with the Palermo keeper already beaten.
Struna was handed his marching orders after a late challenge on Bruno Fernandes.
Palermo, who had beaten Genoa 1-0 in their Serie A opener, defended deeply to secure another three points.
Torino 3-1 Fiorentina
Torino struck three times in the space of 10 minutes to clinch a 3-1 come-from-behind victory over Fiorentina in Turin.
Marcos Alonso put the visitors ahead in the 10th minute but the hosts hit back after the restart with goals from Emiliano Moretti, Fabio Quagliarella and Daniele Baselli to seal the win.
The victory, Toro's second straight following their 2-1 win at Frosinone last week, has lifted the Granata to second place in the standings, level on six points with Chievo, Inter Milan, Sassuolo and Palermo.
