Tottenham were able to pull of the predictable result Wednesday when they sent five goals past League One side Gillingham in their EFL Cup opener.

Mauricio Pochettino elected to name an especially young side to face off against the Gills. Vincent Janssen, Christian Eriksen and Érik Lamela were the only inclusions from what you might expect Pochettino’s preferred XI might be.

It’s no surprise that the latter two players combined to score almost all of Tottenham’s goals. They weren’t the only highlight on the day, but their contributions are certainly reflected in their match day ratings.

Let’s take a look how Tottenham’s kids did against the Gills, and what we might expect when they take on Liverpool in the EFL Cup’s fourth round.

Defense

Michel Vorm – 3.5 / 5

The Dutchman impressed in two and a half appearances for Tottenham early in the season when Hugo Lloris went down injured. He wasn’t called upon to do much on Wednesday, but his appearance here over on-loan prospect Pau López suggests Vorm’s season isn’t done yet.

Ben Davies – 3.5 / 5

After being left out of the matchday squad against Sunderland in favor of Jan Vertonghen, Davies returned to the fold for a competent performance. With Danny Rose returning to full fitness, this might be his last appearance for a while.

    Kevin Wimmer – 4 / 5

Pochettino expressed some indirect doubts about the Austrian this season, hinting that Cameron Carter-Vickers had ascended above him in the pecking order. His appearance here then was something of a delight, and he looked unchanged from his impressive cameo appearance last season.

    Cameron Carter-Vickers – 4.5 / 5

The young American gets a boost in ratings here for his debut and, frankly, how well beyond his years he looked. The Gills rarely tested him, but when they did the 18-year-old handled things in a mature and composed manner. This is one for the future.

    Kieran Trippier – 4 / 5

Kyle Walker’s understudy did fine here, and did well to earn the penalty that resulted in Vincent Janssen’s first goal for Tottenham.

    Midfield

    Tom Carroll – 3.5 / 5

Both Carroll and Winks got starts shortly after signing renewed deals with the clubs, which felt fitting. Carroll was the more advanced of the two players and did well to push play forward. His in ability to find reliable avenues to unleash through balls past the Gills’ defense was a bit frustrating, but well done overall.

    Harry Winks – 4 / 5

What a player Winks looks like he’ll be. He has some work to do to surpass Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama, but this display of calm control and diligence in midfield pads his resume nicely.

    Attack

    Christian Eriksen – 4.5 / 5

The Dane’s two goals opened Spurs’ account. With Pochettino publically calling for other players to contribute goals in Harry Kane’s absence, this is a good sign that Eriksen might become a regular scoring threat from open play once again.

    Érik Lamela – 4.5 / 5

Lamela’s playmaking efforts sometimes get lost beneath his poor finishing and contributions elsewhere on the pitch, but the Argentine knows how to set up a shot. Three of Tottenham’s five goals began from the Lamela’s boot, and he scored his own goal to cap off a very fine performance.

    Vincent Janssen – 4 / 5

Tottenham’s new starting striker looked sharp in his first match alone atop the side’s formation. He might not have gotten the service he needed to score in open play, but his penalty goal might just kick off the form Spurs will need to be in as he takes over for Kane for the next two months.
