Pressure mounts for Sociedad's Moyes after loss to Las Palmas
Pressure continued to mount on Real Sociedad boss David Moyes as goals from Jonathan Viera and Sergio Araujo clinched lowly Las Palmas a 2-0 home win to send his side spiralling into a relegation battle.
Viera fired home the opening goal for Las Palmas in the 27th minute and another abject display from Moyes' side was compounded by a second for the home side on the counter-attack from Araujo six minutes into the second half.
Moyes was already feeling the heat with his side - without a home win this season - lying two points and one place above the drop zone heading into the match. Victory for Las Palmas lifts them off the foot of the table.
Second-half substitute Sergio Canales went closest for Real when his snap-shot struck the crossbar in the closing moments. Neither side had created a decent goalscoring chance before Viera broke the deadlock midway through the first half, the striker firing home after latching on to Vicente Gomez's headed pass.
Asier Illarramendi went close for Real shortly after the restart but Las Palmas doubled their lead in the 51st minute. Vicente Gomez was again the provider with another fine pass and Araujo showed neat control at the end of a sweeping move before shooting beyond Real goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli.
Canales tested home goalkeeper Javi Varas with a firm drive in the 74th minute and Real defender Yuri skied his effort following a decent cross from Xabi Prieto before Canales' late shot struck the woodwork to complete a miserable night for Moyes' side.
