PSV midfielder Andres Guardado faces fitness race for Champions League tie

PSV midfielder Andres Guardado faces a race to get fit in time for the Champions League round of 16 tie against Atletico Madrid after sustaining an injury over the weekend.

Guardado is expected to miss "some weeks" after damaging his hamstring in PSV's 4-2 victory over De Graafschap on Saturday, the club revealed on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old midfielder sustained the knock when he stretched awkwardly to control the ball in the final quarter of an hour. He subsequently limped off eight minutes from time to receive further treatment.

PSV medical staffers evaluated the complaint in the aftermath of the game and placed him in a rehabilitation program, according to a club statement.

The exact severity of the issue is unknown at this time, but the nebulous timeline places his availability for both legs of the round of 16 tie against Atletico in considerable doubt.

PSV host the first leg at Philips Stadion on Feb. 24, while Atletico stage the second leg on March 15.
