Rained out Manchester City/Monchengladbach Champions League match to be played Wednesday

Published Nov. 15, 2016 2:40 p.m. ET

Manchester City and Borussia Monchengladbach will play their Champions League group stage opener on Wednesday at the Etihad Stadium. The match was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but extreme rain in Manchester flooded the pitch and left it unplayable, so UEFA decided to put the match off.

The rain in the area stopped not long after UEFA decided to postpone the match and the forecast doesn't call for any more rain. At this point, it's just about the field draining well enough, which should not be a problem.

The rescheduled match will slide right into the same time slot as the other matches, kicking off at 2:45 p.m. ET. So there will be nine matches going on at the same time on Wednesday.

Neither team will be very happy about the change in date. They're both scheduled to play in their domestic leagues on Saturday so now they'll only have two days off between matches instead of their scheduled three, but with the weather causing problems, it's not like UEFA or either club's domestic federation had a good solution. This is probably the best way forward to sort out a bad situation.
