Report: Carlos Tevez in line to become world's highest-paid player

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 1:33 p.m. ET

On the verge of turning 33, far removed from his top days at Manchester United, Manchester City and Juventus, Carlos Tevez is reportedly in line to become the world's highest-paid player.

Tevez is slated to move, in a $78.2 million transfer, from Boca Juniors to Shanghai Shenhua, where he will reportedly make $762,000 a week in the most eye-opening of the many moves of its kind regarding high-profile players transferring to the Chinese Super League.

Tevez and Chelsea midfielder Oscar are the two big names featuring in the Chinese rumor mill, with the latter reportedly heading to Shanghai SIPG in a $75 million transfer.

Tevez, meanwhile, played what was widely expected to be his final match at La Bombonera in his hometown of Buenos Aires Sunday night in Boca Juniors' 4-1 win over Colon. Tevez scored, much to the delight of the supporters–one of whom ran onto the field to express his feelings to the player directly.

The moves would be the latest swoop for the Chinese top flight, which has already recruited the high-profile likes of Jackson Martinez, Alex Teixeira, Gervinho, Graziano Pelle, Ramires, Fredy Guarin, Fredy Montero, Demba Ba, Burak Yilmaz, Papiss Cisse, Asamoah Gyan, Tim Cahill, Paulinho and Obafemi Martins.

A number of high-profile managers are also plying their trade in the league, including Luiz Felipe Scolari, Andre Villas-Boas, Manuel Pellegrini, Gus Poyet and Felix Magath.
