Report: Liverpool plan big-money swoop for Lewandowski
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp reportedly wants to bring Bayern Munich goal machine Robert Lewandowski to Anfield – and is ‘confident’ of pulling off the coup.
The Reds confirmed the appointment of Klopp as their new manager on Friday and the new Anfield chief indicated in his first press conference that he was happy with the players at his disposal.
But Sunday’s papers have linked Liverpool to two new goalkeepers to replace Simon Mignolet, while there are also several reports that Bayern striker Lewandowski is also on Klopp’s radar.
The new Kop boss signed Lewandowski for Borussia Dortmund from Lech Poznan in 2010 after a move to Blackburn fell through after the player’s flight to England was cancelled following a volcanic eruption in Iceland.
And with Lewandowski’s agent hinting that the striker’s future will not be with Bayern Munich – Klopp is ready to make a £40million bid to tempt the 27-year-old to Anfield.
The Poland marksman became a big hero at Dortmund – but then soured his reputation with the club’s fans when he allowed his contract to expire and joined bitter rivals Bayern in 2014.
Klopp identified Lewandowski as the player who has given him most satisfaction as a coach.
He said: “The biggest satisfaction you can get is when you take a player from Poland, from a small club and watch him play like he does today.
“The difference between that player we signed and the player he is today is unbelievable.”
Lewandowski has been in sensational form this season, scoring five goals in nine minutes against Wolfsburg for Bayern and then ending Scotland’s hopes of qualifying for Euro 2016 with a double at Hampden Park as Poland forced a 2-2 draw.
